By sharing our story, our performance and our commitments in our first CSR Report, we invite our customers and other interested parties to discuss how well we are living up to expectations and how we can improve. In this section, we outline the goals we have set in each of our six Performance Areas for 2006.
1. Natural Resources
- 1.1 Work with State and Federal governments, industry groups and interested parties to develop uniform, science-based air quality emission standards for livestock operations.
- 1.2 Finalize methane digester project and construction schedule for completion.
- 1.3 Develop and define engineering requirements for alternative fuel proposal [ethanol plant].
- 1.4 Conduct energy inventory for energy consumption.
- 1.5 Cooperate with Oregon State University and other universities to study/evaluate the "net benefits" of farm production activities related to the generation of oxygen.
2. Agricultural Practices
- 2.1 Seek "Salmon Safe" certification for food crops.
- 2.2 Increase percentage of fertilizer applied to crop fields from organic sources.
- 2.3 Seek opportunities to work with Oregon State University for studies and internships on agricultural projects [see 4.4, below].
- 2.4 Seek continuous improvement in ways we record and report traceability of all agricultural products sold through the supply chain to customers.
3. Workplace
- 3.1 Recruit and hire a Director of Human Resources [completed January, 2006].
- 3.2 Bring consistency to wages and benefits offered in all operating units.
- 3.3 Develop a bi-monthly newsletter for employee communications.
4. Animal Welfare
- 4.1 Feed whole milk to all Jersey calves.
- 4.2 Improve flush water through development of preprocessing digester technology.
- 4.3 Improve "prenatal care" for cows 60 days prior to calving.
- 4.4 Continue to work with Oregon State University and other universities regarding studies and internships related to animal welfare and other farm operations.
5. Community
- 5.1 Work with community-based groups to provide legal assistance to agricultural workers in obtaining legal immigration status.
- 5.2 Work with CASA of Oregon to develop family housing options in Boardman community.
- 5.3 Develop sponsorship relationship with Farmers against Hunger and other related Food Bank programs.
- 5.4 Establish worker/manager committee to develop a strategy and action plan for local corporate charitable contributions.
- 5.5 Provide basic employee training for financial literacy.
6. Management Systems
- 6.1 Utilize Business for Social Responsibility organization to develop systems to track key Performance Areas.
- 6.2 Recruit and hire a Director of Corporate Social Responsibility [completed January, 2006].
- 6.3 Integrate CSR into our strategic and business planning processes; hold our managers accountable for achieving CSR goals.
- 6.4 Hold our labor contractors and suppliers accountable for meeting our CSR principles and code of conduct.
- 6.5 Design and implement stakeholder communication/engagement programs.
